Portland is home to many amazing nurseries and garden centers. And it’s no wonder we have so many plant-filled retailers, being located in the lush valley. All that rain has some reward! From larger nurseries and farms to small garden nurseries to hole in the wall plant shops. So here are our favorite nurseries in Portland, Oregon. The best spots to fill out that new container gardener. Give them a follow and a visit! And remember shopping local at these garden centers help keep our favorite spots in business. And they’re way more convenient and knowledgeable than big box garden centers anyway!

Here are our favorite big and small garden centers in Portland, Oregon from close-in to Portland area suburbs. A couple of the smaller nurseries you’ll also find on my list of the best Portland plant shops. Happy gardening!
1. Portland Nursery – Stark & Division
Portland Nursery is still hands-down my favorite garden center. Maybe it’s part nostalgia, but I love my annual tradition of spring garden planning and picking out my garden supplies of plant starts and seeds. Portland nursery even offered curbside pickup during much of the pandemic. And they have a great drive-thru portion to pick up potting soil. Portland Nursery has a huge selection of native plants, shrubs, and trees and knowledgable staff. This isn’t your Home Depot garden center selection! And they even offer garden design services. Portland Nursery is also where you will find the official rose for Portland’s annual rose festival! Portland is famous for our rose gardens, and what better place for roses than Portland Nursery.

2. Garden Fever
Garden Fever is one of the garden shops in Portland that bridges the gap between plant shop and nursery. It looks like a small space when you goo by, but it’s pretty expansive with a selection of home goods, plants and bushes, garden starts and seeds, and dirt. A great place to pick up your spring garden starts and seeds.

3. Livingscape
Livingscape is another smaller nursery that bridges the gap nursery and plant shop. One of the last old houses now boxed in by condos between Vancouver and Williams St in North Portland. They have new owners in the last couple years, and the shop is still as cozy as ever. You can find houseplants, smaller garden supplies like starts and seeds, and even chicken supplies. Beyond general garden stuff, they focus on NW native plants and medicinal plants!

4. Cornell Farm Nursery
Cornell Farm Nursery & Cafe is a beautiful spot on the west side. They have all the usual garden center things – house plants, native plants, garden supplies, and a lovely cafe. If you’re looking for the full experience garden center this is a great stop! They have several greenhouses with plants, chicken coop, and lots of parking.

5. Pomarius Nursery
This smaller urban nursery has a surprising amount of space and selection. But you’ll feel transported to another world, while still in the industrial NW district (between Hwy 30, 405, and the river). Pomarius is an urban oasis that has everything you need from getting your container garden ready for spring to houseplants, pots, and succulents.

6. Farmington Gardens
Farmington Gardens is another westside nursery – with several locations. Being just out of the city provides them with a huge amount of space. So definitely a different feel than the small nurseries within inner Portland. The Beaverton location is their largest, they also have a downtown Hillsboro nursery and a seasonal pop-up in Aloha. They have great selection, prices, and even landscaping options.

7. Marbott’s Garden Center
Marbott’s Garden Center feels like a North Portland secret! They’ve been in business since 1930 and while their online presence isn’t huge, they are a great in-person nursery. Marbott’s offers a huge selection of annuals, perennials, indoor plants, soil and more at great prices!

8. Birds & Bees Nursery
Another of Portland’s great small nurseries and plant shops. Birds and Bees is at the intersection of SE Portland’s Richmond, South Tabor, and Foster-Powell neighborhoods off SE 50th Ave. Similar to Livingscape and Garden Fever, they offer plants, garden starts and seeds and the ever-abundant house plants and planters stock. A true neighborhood gem.

9. Cistus Design Nursery
Cistus is a bit further afield than some on this list since it’s on Sauvie Island. But it is truly a unique and delightful spot. They call themselves a micro-nursery, and specialize in hardy tropical plants, Mediterranean climate and southern hemisphere plants like succulents and more. They also offer design and planning services for gardens!

10. Stafford Ridge Nursery (Kordell’s)
This West Linn nursery has recently changed ownership, but is still the nursery many have known and loved! Previously Kordell’s Garden Center, and now called Stafford Ridge Nursery. They have plant and berry starts, trees, seeds, pottery, and vegetable gardening supplies. Everything you need for outdoor landscaping and gardens.

11. The Garden Corner
Garden Corner is a unique nursery that specializing in hanging baskets and less common plants. They of course have all the regular garden center items as well. But it definitely has a different vibe than some of the other Portland area nurseries! And they have a giant hanging basket which is pretty funny.

12. Hughes Water Garden
Hughes Water Garden is another Tualatin nursery. They specialize in water plants, ponds, waterfalls and fountains. This is one of the mosts unique nurseries in Portland. And visiting will give you all kinds of ideas for your dream garden!

13. Al’s Garden & Home
Al’s Garden Center is a great option in Gresham if you’re on the east side. They cover all the gardening needs from seeds to plant starts, to flowers and trees, native plants, pottery and more.

14. Tony’s Garden Center
Tony’s Garden Center has three Portland area locations – SE, Happy Valley, and Damascus. They are a family-owned nursery with great prices and selection for the farther out SE suburbs. They offer the typical nursery items – plants, starts, seeds, soil, house plants, planters, and even offer some gardening workshops!

15. Dennis’ 7 Dees and Drake’s 7 Dees
You can’t finish a Portland Garden Center’s list without mentioning the 7 Dees Nurseries! A Portland area mainstay! Dennis’ 7 Dees has locations in Lake Oswego, and Cedar Hills, Vancouver, and Seaside, and plant shops in Bridgeport Village, and Rejuvenation in SE. And Drake’s 7 Dees in SW Portland. And while they are pretty big operations these days and also specialize in residential and commercial landscaping installations, they are still a local family run Portland area business. So before you stop by a big box garden center, give one of the 7 Dees a try!
